GRANULATION MEDIUM

What is Granulation Medium?

Granulation Medium provides a granular appearance to any colors desired. If this product is added to an already granulating pigment, the effect will either be enhanced further or not necessary depending on the natural granulating effect of the pigment. Rough paper vs. hot press will also help enhance the effect since it provides more visual texture.

How is Granulation Medium different from granulating pigments?

Granulation is a characteristic of some pigments which occur naturally when the large and heavy pigment particles settle into the paper and create a mottled effect.

Granulating colors will be marked on the tube with a G.

How and when to use Granulation Medium:

For maximum effect, dilute pigment in medium alone. dilute pigment further with water for more variety in the effect. I find it helps to shake or tap the painting  a bit to encourage the medium to work it's magic. Try to keep the watercolor in a horizontal position.
